Research Overview

  • Dr. Holt specializes in the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and other liver diseases such as viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, alcoholic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). He is board certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology, and transplant hepatology.
  • As Director of the Fatty Liver Program at CPMC, Dr. Holt oversees the care of patients with NAFLD and organizes research studies, including clinical trials of new drugs for this disease.
  • Dr. Holt presents locally and nationally on topics including the treatment of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (“NASH” – liver inflammation caused by a buildup of fat in the liver), acute liver failure, and the impact of obesity on gastrointestinal and liver disease.
  • His research examines the natural history of NAFLD in an ethnically diverse population. Patients seen in CPMC’s Fatty Liver Clinic have the opportunity to participate in prospective cohort studies and in clinical trials.
