Research Overview

  • Dr. Michael Chez has 20 years’ experience in the innovative use of drug and immunological therapies for refractory autism and in epilepsy research, treatment, and epilepsy surgical monitoring.
  • He is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, with special competence in child neurology.
  • Dr. Chez is Director of Pediatric Neurology of the Sutter Autism Medical Treatment Center, and he co-founded the Sutter Autism Treatment Center and Sutter Transition for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders Clinic (STAND). As the only clinical autism treatment program in the Sacramento Region and one of the only programs in California, STAND offers the latest in clinical diagnostic techniques and medical and non-medical treatments for autism and autism spectrum disorders.
  • He has published research in journals including Neurology, Brain, and Neuropediatrics, and recently published a book entitled “The Medical Management of Autism: A Guide for Parents and Professionals.”
  • In addition to his practice in pediatric neurological care, Dr. Chez leads research to advance the treatment of childhood epilepsy and seizure disorders, autistic spectrum disorders, motor and speech delays, childhood headaches, learning disorders, degenerative diseases of the nervous system, hydrocephalus, learning disorders, muscular dystrophy, and spina bifida. He and colleagues at STAND are on the cutting-edge of research and known internationally for providing the most innovative care available.
  • Dr. Chez is the Pediatric Neurology Lead for the Sutter Neuroscience Research Consortium.

Training

Dr. Chez received his M.D. from the Indiana University School of Medicine and served his internship and residency in pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He completed a fellowship in pediatric neurology at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, and subsequently received his fellowship training in epilepsy at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago.
