Research Overview

  • Dr. Townsend practices intensive care medicine in CPMC’s Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care.
  • He oversees quality and safety, accreditation, infection control, clinical documentation integrity, quality informatics, AIDS case management, and matrix oversight of risk management at CPMC.
  • He designed and implemented a patient safety alert system to manage sentinel events; created programs to incorporate “lean” management into clinical processes; and championed efforts resulting in an 85% reduction in errors in discharge medication reconciliation at CPMC campuses.
  • Dr. Townsend led the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s work on sepsis to improve outcomes for high-risk and critically ill patients.

Training


Dr. Townsend received his M.D. from the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and a Harvard Medical School combined fellowship in pulmonary and critical care at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
