California Pacific CURRENTS: The online journal of CPMC Research Institute

Improving understanding of the mechanisms underlying liver injury and repair; pioneering novel strategies for the treatment of liver diseases

Research Overview

  • Dr. Davern is an international expert in acute liver failure and liver regeneration. He is board certified in gastroenterology, and liver disease/hepatology.
  • He directs the Acute Liver Failure Program at CPMC and is exploring novel diagnostic methods to stratify patients with acute liver failure and predict which patients will require transplantation.
  • At national and international meetings and symposia, Dr. Davern has lectured on advances in the management of hepatitis C, liver failure, and drug-induced liver disease.
  • He investigates novel treatments for acute liver failure such as hepatic assist devices and liver cell transplantation, and new approaches to chronic liver disease including gene therapy/replacement.

Training

Dr. Davern obtained his M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, New York. He completed residency training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and fellowships in gastroenterology and molecular medicine at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center.
