Developing new approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer and pulmonary diseases

Research Overview

  • Dr. Tze-Ming (Benson) Chen is a pulmonary and critical care medicine specialist. He treats patients with lung cancer; pulmonary diseases including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and emphysema; and critical care diseases including acute respiratory distress syndrome and acute liver failure.
  • He has specialized training in the use of endoscopic bronchial ultrasound (EBUS) for the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer, electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy for the assessment of peripheral lung nodules, and placement of one-way endobronchial valves for persistent bronchopleural fistula.
  • Dr. Chen advances the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer and pulmonary diseases through his studies of new technologies and risk reduction strategies including smoking cessation. He directs CPMC’s Lung Cancer Screening Program – an initiative aimed at-risk individuals to help detect cancer early, manage annual screenings and any associated follow-up evaluations, and to assist with smoking cessation.
  • Dr. Chen is a Principal Investigator for the EMPROVE study, which will assess the use of an investigational device for the treatment of emphysema.
  • He is a Physician Lead in CPMCRI’s Cancer Avatar Project.
